After 68 years, legendary discount store behemoth Honest Ed’s at the corner of Bathurst and Bloor will be closing its doors for good on December 31st.
It is the end of an era.
Honest Ed’s was the place to shop for many people who had come to Canada and made downtown Toronto the site of their first North American home.
Everything was CHEAP! You could get a whole chicken for 5 cents and a dress for $10. When moving to a new country saving money is key. Honest Ed’s made Torontonian living a bit easier for everyone.
Over the years, as more large stores moved in, and people strived to keep up with the Joneses, it became more evident that the store opened by long-time entrepreneur Ed Mirvish no longer functioned as a store, but as a symbol of a time gone by.
It became time to say goodbye.
The biggest goodbye will come in February 2017 as Toronto hosts THE BIGGEST art party for and in Honest Ed’s courtesy of The Centre for Social Innovation (CSI).
The party is called Toronto for Everyone and will be an inclusive party for the place that included everyone. Who better to lead the charge, than artists – the ones who create culture and express culture.
Artists, the time to submit is NOW!! For real. Right now. The deadline is this Friday, December 2nd.
Visual artists, photographers, sculptors (?) whoever. If you create it, submit it! Be a part of Toronto history!
Go to http://www.TorontoforEveryone.com for more information and submit your work.
Very best of luck.
